What to Expect: Shadow Hawk is one of two Rees Jones designs at the complex found southwest of Houston (the Houstonian being the other). The private club is lined with pecan trees and features an oxbow lake in the middle of the property that was implemented in the design. Like most of the Houston area, the terrain is flat and therefore the greens were raised (similarly to Winged Foot) to bring character and definition to the course. There are no tricks or gimmicks at Shadow Hawk as the course is laid out clearly in front of the golfer which is an attribute the many low handicap and tournament players prefer and appreciate. Yardages are measured to the front of the green rather than the center; a practice that is much more common in Europe than in America due to the ground game that is often played on the other side of the pond. Caddies are available for patrons that elect to infuse some local knowledge into their shots and learn to navigate the subtleties of the course. Overall, Shadow Hawk is a very good course that has premier conditioning and is thoughtfully laid out with tournament golf in mind.
