The Takeaway: A solid test of golf but lacking the personality or creativity in the design to be truly compelling. Water comes into play throughout the course and stands as a way to create some interest in the flat terrain.

What to Expect: Located southwest of Houston, the Houstonian Golf and Country Club is part of The Redstone Companies which also owns and operates neighboring Shadow Hawk, the 36 hole Blackhorse facility, and the 36 hole Redstone facility. Designed by Rees Jones, the course seems to features nearly as much water (50 acres) as there are fairways (419 Tif-way Bermuda). In addition, over forty bunkers are found throughout the course which is devoid of imposing homes. The natural terrain is flat, so Jones built up some mounding to add definition and character to the green sites and bunkers. Each hole is either framed by trees or by water and sometimes both. Like most Rees Jones courses, the design is straightforward with tournament play in mind which in turn results in a general lack of creativity or spectacular holes. When all is said and done, the premier practice facility and conditioning make The Houstonian an excellent venue for hosting top flight tournaments, but the flat terrain and lack of design creativity prevent it from being recognized as one of Texas’ top tier tracks.
