What to Expect:  Located on remote property 30 miles east of St. George, Kokopelli is the newest offering to the golf mecca of southern Utah and is the design work of former BYU legend Bruce Summerhays. At 7600+ yards it is the longest, and certainly most challenging, course located in the bottom of the Beehive State. Oodles of trouble is found off the tee with each hole framed by bunkers, desert, or lava rock. The terrain is more high desert than traditional desert and thus features a mixture of juniper trees, sagebrush, and lava rock that isn’t as common 1500’ – 2000’ below in the St. George valley. The sand at Kokopelli doesn’t have the strong orange tint that is found in much of southern Utah and thus the surrounding vistas have a different flavor as well. The front nine climbs up to a high point midway through the opening holes before cascading back towards the clubhouse. The back nine plays along the lava rock beds and features significant elevation changes on the 10th and 18th holes and soft terrain slopes on the others. If you are looking for a challenge, you need not look at further than Kokopelli and the extra altitude allows a ten degree cooler temperature to enjoy during southern Utah’s intense summer heat. Though Sand Hollow is still the area’s top public course, Kokopelli earns the silver medal and is well worth playing.
