The Takeaway: McCormick Woods is a nice public course to enjoy when in the greater Seattle area and pairs well with a visit to Gold Mountain. It won’t be the star of a golf trip, but you won’t be disappointed playing it. Grade C+

What to Expect: McCormick Woods is one of the best greater Seattle public courses and is found on the “other” side of the Puget Sound in the city of Port Orchard. The course enjoys gently undulated terrain carved through large evergreens; a classic feature of golf in the Northwest. The course is plenty challenging from the tips while contending with the heavy, damp air prevalent inside the sea level forested areas near the Sound which tends to make the course play longer. Homes are found on the perimeter of the course but aren’t a huge factor or distraction given the size and frequency of trees located between the fairway and the residences. The key to good conditioning in the coastal Pacific Northwest is having proper drainage substructure to handle the amount of rain prevalent in the area. Drainage at McCormick Woods is better than most courses, though not perfect, which helps lead to lush fairways where the ball sits up and greens that can be made firm if desired. A scenic, affordable, and enjoyable 36 hole day is to take a trip to the west side of Puget Sound and tee it up at McCormick Woods in the morning paired with Gold Mountain’s Olympic course in the afternoon; then repeat the next day.
